My Jeep Journey - Ed's Story

Meet Ed Bigus.

Ed has owned a few Jeeps in his time, here is his story below:

The first car I ever owned was, of course, a Jeep. I was just 16 years old when I bought a yellow 1968 Kaiser-Jeep CJ-5 with a 2” Rancho suspension lift and 33” Mickey Thompson tires. I mainly drove this in the deserts of Arizona and Mexico making two runs down the Baja peninsula. What a great Jeep that was!

In between that 1968 CJ-5 and the 2019 Wrangler JLU I have now, I've owned three other Jeeps. A black 1989 Wrangler I drove on the beaches and in the wine country around San Francisco, and then again in the deserts of Arizona when we moved back in 1995. After living around the world we ended up in Seattle Washington in 2005 with a green 1992 Jeep Wrangler. Built for the Pacific Northwest forest roads she had 4 inch lift and 35 inch mud tyres. I still recall pulling the kids on sleds through the snow behind that Jeep. Then when we moved to NZ I bought a 2007 Jeep Cherokee (Liberty in the US) which I lifted 2 inches and ran 31 inch all terrains on. Loved exploring parts of the Coromandel and nearby Auckland forests and beaches but it wasn't until I got the 2019 Wrangler Unlimited that we really set out to explore NZ. COVID helped with that as we were "stuck" here not able to travel overseas. We would log thousands of kilometers in single adventures. Some of our favourite spots are in Northland up by Mangonui and Kerikeri. Of course Tepaki and 90 Mile Beach are up there as well. We really want to head south this spring! So watch this space!
